Every time we open the newspaper or watch local, national, or world news, we are invaded by a plethora of narratives on climate change. This course seeks to utilize cultural productions from Mexico and Brazil to discuss the impacts of climate change on our planet and on people's everyday lives. Through in-depth analysis and discussion, students will examine the ways in which marginalized communities are often disproportionately impacted by climate-related hazards and environmental degradation. Throughout the semester, students will engage with videos, analyze images, and read scientific and literary texts. A series of assignments will prompt students to reflect on how literary texts and videos contribute to the discussion on environmental and climate issues. Individual and group hands-on projects will provide students with opportunities to creatively explore alternative strategies to challenge our contemporary paradigm of development. Ultimately, this course seeks to inspire students to become agents of positive change, contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
