Building Communities in Online Courses

Building communities in an online course can be challenging when creating a sense of belonging in an asynchronous platform. The creation of virtual communities in online environments through engaging activities enhances the students-to-student and student-instructor experience resulting in closure of the gap between a sense of belonging and online depersonalized learning. This workshop aims to explore and structure engaging activities for online students to create a sense of belonging in a community, while supporting course goals. Participants will explore ways in which online content can be created and delivered using both existing D2L tools, and free external tools.

Workshop Learning Objectives

  • Identify factors of depersonalized learning and the concept of virtual communities.
  • Explore different ways to deliver online content through engaging activities.
  • Create a synchronous or asynchronous engaging activity for online students applying the concept of virtual communities.
