About

Founded as “the Spanish Program” in 1896, the now-known Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona is a vibrant and diverse community of scholars and teachers dedicated to advancing knowledge of the languages, literatures, and cultures of the Spanish and Lusophone world. Through our excellent academic programs, community engagement, and internship opportunities, our department plays a vital role in the College of Humanities’ commitment to addressing the major challenges of a rapidly changing world, engaging with and collaborating alongside local and international communities, and fostering communication and work ethics among people from various backgrounds. We offer a BA, MA, and PhD in Hispanic Linguistics and Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures and Cultures, all of which encourage rigorous interdisciplinary scholarship. We take pride in having some of the oldest and largest Spanish as a Heritage Language and Spanish as a World Language programs in the country, along with an expansive Critical Service-Learning Program that connects students with the local community, a study abroad program offering summer and semester-long experiences in Latin America and Spain, a variety of in-person and online undergraduate courses, and an undergraduate Translation and Interpretation program designed to give students practical, hands-on experience.
