UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese General Scholarship

Applicants must be full time undergraduate or graduate students of the University of Arizona. The committee will evaluate each applicant based on academic merit, financial need, and other relevant criteria. The number and amount of each award will be determined by available funds.

The Byron Browder Scholarship

Applicants must be Spanish majors with outstanding academic ability and in financial need. 

The Mamie Bernard and Pedro Joab Aguirre Scholarship

Applicant must be an undergraduate women enrolled in upper-division Spanish courses. The committee will evaluate each applicant based on academic merit and and financial need with preference given to students returning to school.  

The Sarah Doyle Scholarship for Study Abroad in Alcalá de Henares

This scholarship is intended for a student participating in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese study abroad program to Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Applicant must be a full time student with a major in Spanish or minor in Spanish or Portuguese with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or greater. Department committee selects based on financial need and academic merit. Preference will be given to those in the UA Club Lacrosse program if applicable. Scholarship may be awarded for two semesters but recipient must reapply for consideration with maintenance of a 3.2 GPA or greater.

The Elizabeth H. Gad Scholarship

For undergraduate students majoring in Spanish or Portuguese who are studying abroad in Alcalá de Henares, Spain with the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. 

The Thomas & Peggy Kauffman Hyde Scholarship in Alcalá de Henares 

Applicants must be full time undergraduate or graduate students with a minimum 3.0 GPA in their core major and minor, 2.0 GPA overall, with a major in Spanish or Portuguese Studies, making satisfactory progress toward their degree, and enrolled in coursework in Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Arizona. Incoming freshman are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be studying abroad in Alcalá de Henares, Spain with the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. The committee will evaluate each student based on academic merit, seriousness of the student, benefit of the program to the student, and other relevant criteria. The number and amount of each award will be determined by available funds. 

The Malcolm Alan Compitello Endowment for Study Abroad 

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students with a minimum 3.2 GPA in their core major and minor (if applicable), 3.0 GPA overall, with a major in Spanish or minor in Spanish or Portuguese who are making satisfactory progress toward their degree. Applicants must have already been accepted and committed to a study abroad program within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese that will contribute to the completion of their degree requirements. The committee will evaluate each student based on academic merit, award benefit to the student's career, and other relevant criteria. The number and amount of each award will be determined by the available funds.

The Nivea Parsons Scholarship for Study in Brazil

Dr. Nivea Parsons, a retired tenured faculty member in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona, was born in Fortaleza, Brazil and passed away on May 14th, 2006 at the age of 70 due to pancreatic cancer. In honor of Dr. Nivea Parsons' great accomplishments here at UA in the Portuguese program, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese is pleased to offer a scholarship in the amount of $500.00 to a motivated student who will be studying in the summer program to Brazil that Dr. Parsons founded.

Dr. Parsons directed the Portuguese program here at UA and taught courses in Portuguese language, Luso-Brazilian Literature, and Brazilian Film and Culture from 1968 until her retirement in 2003. Even after retirement, Dr. Parsons continued to be very much involved with spreading her love for her language and culture to others, continuing to give informal lectures on Brazil as a volunteer to retired UA faculty. She was an inspiration to all her students, friends and colleagues and worked tirelessly to solidify the study of Portuguese at UA. Among other contributions, Dr. Parsons was instrumental in making the Portuguese minor mandatory for those majoring in Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona.

The fund has been established to offer financial assistance to allow an outstanding undergraduate student of Portuguese at the University of Arizona to attend the Department of Spanish & Portuguese summer study program in Brazil. Preference will be given to students who are majors or minors in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. The selection will be based on an application submitted by the student which will include an essay explaining how the study abroad experience will benefit the recipient.  The Committee will also take financial need into consideration.

GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

The Amy R. Williamsen Endowment Scholarship 

This scholarship is intended to support graduate students in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Applicants must be full-time graduate students majoring in Spanish or Portuguese with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA or greater. Preference will be given to students with an interest in early modern Spain and/or colonial Latin America. The number and amount of each award will be determined by the available funds. Award recipients are eligible for renewal consideration if the recipient continues to demonstrate satisfactory academic progress as defined by the eligibility criteria.

The Karen Smith Scholarship

Applicant must be a student in the Department of Hispanic Linguistics nominated by the linguistics faculty of the department. The scholarship may be awarded to students at any level, with preference given to advance graduate students whenever possible.

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese General Scholarship

Applicants must be full time undergraduate or graduate students of the University of Arizona. The committee will evaluate each applicant based on academic merit, financial need, and other relevant criteria. The number and amount of each award will be determined by available funds.
