You don't need prior experience in Spanish to enroll in the minor program. We can help you get started.

2. If you answered yes, did you take a test to earn college credit?

YES

There are several tests offered, and the higher your score the more credit you can earn. Which test did you take?

  • AP
  • IB
  • CLEP

NO

If you did not take either the AP, IB or CLEP tests, but have another type of credit, skip to step 3.

AP exam

Have you received and sent your scores to the University of Arizona?

This is a key first step. Be sure to send your scores so that we can get you the proper credit.

B.
Which AP exam or exams did you take?

There are two AP exams in Spanish: Spanish Language & Culture and Spanish Literature. Students can take one or both of these tests. Open the AP tab below for the test or combination of tests that you took.

If you earn a 5 in both language and literaure SPAN 201, 202, 251, 325, 350 & 3 units of upper-division literature; Satisfies second language requirement for all students 20 units
If you earn any combination of 4 and 5 on two Spanish exams SPAN 201, 202, 251, 325, & 350; Satisfies second language requirement for all students 17 units
If you earn a 4 in both language and literature SPAN 201, 202, 251, & 325; Satisfies second language requirement for all students 14 units
If you earn a 3 in both language and literature or any combination of 4 and 3 on two Spanish exams SPAN 201, 202, & 251; Satisfies second language requirement for all students 11 units

IB exam

There are two IB exams in Spanish:

  • IB Spanish SL Exam
  • IB Spanish HL Exam

Unfortunately, there is no credit earned with the IB Spanish SL Exam.

Step 3
Do you have transfer credit from another college or university?

YES

You can get credit for equivalent courses that you have taken at another University. Please contact an advisor from the Spanish department who can guide you on your next steps.

NO

If you do not have transfer credit, but still have Spanish experience, skip to step 4.


Step 4
What if you have not taken the AP, IB, or CLEP tests and do not have transfer credit, but you still have experience in Spanish?

Have you taken the Spanish Placement/Proficiency exam at the University of Arizona?

YES

Great! You have your test results already. Proceed to Step 5 for one last question.

NO

Please take the exam and resubmit a Spanish minor form once you have your Spanish placement.

Step 5
Do you identify as a Spanish Heritage Learner?

Heritage learners of Spanish are students who have been exposed to Spanish in their homes or communities from a young age. As a consequence of that early exposure, they can understand and/or speak the language and have a personal connection to it. The Spanish for Heritage Learners program at the University of Arizona offers classes for every level, from beginning to advanced.
